The following report (see below) was prepared by the
team that leafletted
the LRT stations on Sunday morning.
Next planned event
------------------
We are now planning to leaflet at Puduraya on
Saturday. As it is a long
weekend, there will be many people at the bus station
leaving KL. This is
a chance to get info to go out of the Klang Valley.
Depending on how many people we can mobilise, we can
be there for most of
the day as buses will be leaving and arriving all day.
In addition, we can
try for shopping centres outside of KL.
Meeting tonight at the Hunger Strike Centre, 8.30pm.
Please come so we can
work out how each of us can help out in the weekend
activity.
Also, please try and contact friends re this Saturday
and ask if they would
be able to volunteer for a few hours helping out.
Contact person is Tashia

Report of Leafleting Exercise, Sunday,27th of May 2001
It was a simple exercise, but with a very clear
purpose - to reach out to
those who know nothing of the ISA and those who know a
little something but
haven't discovered what they can do about it.
The exercise combined both leafletting and riding the
LRT wearing ISA
badges (we couldn't get any t-shirts). It was a
simple but effective
gesture as it brought the issue down to people's
everyday lives. In the
LRT, there were a lot of strained looking faces as
they noticed our badges
- one could see that their otherwise blissful Sunday
outing was shaken a
little with a reminder of the existence of this
draconian law.
Six of us gathered at the Central Market LRT station
and split into 2
groups. One group stayed back at the station to
leaflet and reported that
although they were asked not to leaflet on the station
premises, they were
not harassed about leafletting just outside. This
group encountered a very
high volume of people and was therefore not able to
interact much.
They did however receive some feedback requesting for
the leaflets to be in
other languages. The second group took the LRT to KL
Sentral station. The
interchange between the LRT and commuter trains
provided a good opportunity
for leafletting and talking to people waiting for
their trains. Although
within the premises of the station, this group did not
encounter any
problems.
For one member of this group, this was her first time
leafletting or doing
anything close to activism work. Although in
principle totally against the
ISA, she found it hard, whatever her reason, to bring
herself to
participate in any of the bigger events where she felt
both intimidated and
afraid of ramifications. It took a lot for her to
overcome the "fear" of
expressing her opinion in public but this exercise
definitely provided her
with an outlet.
